Unusual Crimson Lightning Recorded in the Heavens
A group of photographers based in the island nation have managed to photograph photographs of “red sprites”, among the most elusive light phenomena on Earth, in which luminous crimson flashes appear in the sky.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
This group of artists initially planned to shoot the Milky Way over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.
Initially believing they would be lucky to get clear skies that night, but their night became “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved remarked.
“He was checking his images for a stellar landscape and found he had captured red sprites,” the individual said. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in joyful noises and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, produced by thunderstorms. Differing from traditional lightning that shoots towards the ground, red sprites shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, forming appearances that look like pillars, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a such an event was taken – by chance – in that year, by a group at the University of Minnesota.
Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings
They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but an individual had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing right at a sprite when it took place – pure chance viewing the appropriate section of the sky and I saw a brief red flash,” he explained.
Observing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an honored nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Advanced and Creative Mastery
Recording a this phenomenon demands a proficiency with specialized camera skills, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and artistic vision, the photographer explained. “It is a deeply engaging category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I could see the galactic band illuminating above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light danced above a storm at a great distance,” he described.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in a single image.
“This was a singular occasion when you know you are seeing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
